NSW: Cut road toll by boosting highway patrol: Debnam

The New South Wales opposition says cuts to the police Highway Patrol are partially
to blame for an increase in the Easter long weekend road toll.

Nine people have died on NSW roads during the four day long weekend .. up from five
during the same period last year.

Opposition Leader PETER DEBNAM says drivers are continuing to speed .. because a reduction
in Highway Patrol officers means they're unlikely to be caught.

He says numbers have been cut from 12-hundred in 1982 to just over 900 last year ..

and more officers are needed back on the roads.
